Up a cobbled path, behind the boutique Berjaya Duxton Hotel, in a conservation shophouse area, tucked away off Chinatown. A place where you can finish the latest Patricia Cornwell while enjoying a glass of wine ? it?s that brightly lit. The window side of this long, narrow space is taken up by hard, white formica-like banquettes ? hardly conducive to hunkering down for the night and ordering that second, third or fourth bottle. The bar is really the focal point of the space with its mosaic-like back wall with prominent liquor-bottle display. The wines are stored in a glass unit towards the back of the bar. The wine list has many gems and adds to the overall taste sensation that is your meal at the Universal. The 500 selections (including 20 by the glass) cover a large part of the wine-producing world ? Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain ? and range from a heart-racing $8,200 for the ?89 Petrus to $45 (a steal) for the ?06 Rolf Binder Semillon ?Hellions?. The wines by the glass are dispensed from a machine that protects the wine from oxidation and delivers this nectar in the form intended by the maker in the most beautiful glassware.
Sophisticated dining experience where the service is attentive and personal. The menu suits all palates and the portions are smaller (haute cusine) but that works as you spend time enjoying conversation as you progress from appetisers through to dessert. The dining room feels personable and initimate. Great for a romantic dinner or special dining event with friends/family.
The Universal is one of those places you hope will remain a secret. The chandeliers and pop-artsy paintings in the 40-seater restaurant give off a chic fairytale-like quality. The restaurant is divided into two intimate spaces, ideal for small parties or simply privacy. Casual, yet, with an air of formality.
