This unpretentious, yellow-painted pub and backpacker hostel is a slice of Down Under. The sunny decor features touches of red gum timber; Outside, find wooden benches, barbecues and revelry. The Prince of Wales is modeled on the many Australian corner pubs/hotels that provide punters with live music, a variety of cold draught beer, inexpensive accommodation and a casual atmosphere. A subtle Australian feel is brought to the pub through its sunburnt colours, corrugated iron, weatherboard, and red gum timber.
There's a real nice busker/garage band vibe to this place, which isn't surprising considering the pub's location almost in the heart of Backpackerville at Dunlop Street in Little India (Prince of Wales doubles as a backpacker's lodge upstairs). The music's a bit of hit-and-miss, since the acts are all amateur efforts, most of them just honing their live set skills, but once in a while a real music gem is unearthed. Good or bad, the music's loud and the beers are cheap. Aussies love this place especially, with the tap of Gippsland Gold and Brewers Pilsener shipped in directly from the Australian state of Victoria.
Australian draught beer from the Grand Ridge Brewery in Gippsland Victoria is shipped in to compliment the other international draught beers on offer. Foster's, Beamish Irish stout, Newcastle Brown ale, & John Smith's Extra Smooth are all on tap. The music is Alternative original rock, with a different act each night. Sunday through Thursday is 'Live & Unplugged', while Friday & Saturday nights are - Live & Loud - in the main bar. Chill-out in the Beer Garden with picnic tables, BBQ, pool table and sports television. Through the day Prince of Wales serve locally baked meat pies (to Australian
specifications) and pour fine Italian coffee ( Melbourne style).
The Prince of Wales is open 9am to 1am, 7 days a week. A night
